Depeche Mode - Policy Of Truth

"Policy of Truth" is Depeche Mode's twenty-fifth UK single, released on 7 May 1990, and the third single for the album Violator.
The cover art for "Policy of Truth" has the blurred image of a nude woman. The camera angles and poses differ on the 7" Vinyl, the 12" Vinyl, the CD and Cassette. Usually each one has more than one. On the L12, there is a picture of a different woman.
Despite its success as a single, "Policy of Truth" was not included on the band's Best of, Volume 1 hits collection of 2006.
It is considered by many people as one of Depeche Mode's signature songs.
Although the song was less successful than the first two singles before, it is the only Depeche Mode single to chart higher on the Billboard Hot 100 (#15) than on the UK Singles Chart (#16), as well as peaking at number two on the American dance charts.
It also became the band's second chart-topper on the Modern Rock Tracks chart.
François Kevorkian mixed a new single version for the release, extending it slightly while lowering the tempo, and also making Dave Gahan's vocals more prominent. He also mixed the Beat Box Mix (the 12" version of the single mix) and the Pavlov's Dub.
The lyrics:
You had something to hide
Should have hidden it, shouldn't you?
Now you're not satisfied
With what you're being put through

It's just time to pay the price
For not listening to advice
And deciding in your youth
On the policy of truth

Things could be so different now
It used to be so civilized
You will always wonder how
It could have been if you'd only lied

It's too late to change events
It's time to face the consequence
For delivering the proof
In the policy of truth

Never again
Is what you swore
The time before

Never again
Is what you swore
The time before

Now you're standing there tongue tied
You better learn your lesson well
Hide what you have to hide
And tell what you have to tell

You'll see your problems multiplied
If you continually decide
To faithfully pursue
The policy of truth

Never again
Is what you swore
The time before

Never again
Is what you swore
The time before

Never again
Is what you swore
The time before

Never again
Is what you swore
The time before

Never again
Is what you swore

The time before

Depeche Mode - Heaven

Heaven is a song by English electronic music band Depeche Mode, released as the lead single from their thirteenth studio album, Delta Machine (2013).
Written by Martin L. Gore and produced by Ben Hillier, the song was world-premiered on KROQ's morning show Kevin and Bean on 30 January 2013.
The single was released digitally in most territories on 31 January 2013, and physically on 1 February. In the United Kingdom, "Heaven" was released digitally on 17 March 2013 and physically the following day. The B-side "All That's Mine" was written by Dave Gahan and Kurt Uenala. An accompanying music video for "Heaven" was directed by Timothy Saccenti and premiered on VEVO on 1 February 2013.
In June 2013, the single was certified gold by the Federazione Industria Musicale Italiana (FIMI), denoting downloads exceeding 15,000 units in Italy.
Music video
The music video for "Heaven" was directed by Timothy Saccenti and filmed in November 2012 at The Marigny Opera House, a former Catholic church in New Orleans's Faubourg Marigny.
Previously, Saccenti had directed the "In-Studio Collage 2012" video for "Angel" that premiered at the band's press conference in Paris on 23 October 2012.
The video's look was inspired by Terence Malick's 2011 film The Tree of Life, with its beautiful yet twisted, dark imagery. "Mainly it's a performance video, which we haven't done in a long time", Gahan stated.
The lyrics:
Sometimes I slide away, silently
I slowly lose myself, over and over
Take comfort in my skin endlessly
Surrender to my will forever and ever

Chorus:
I dissolve in trust
I will sing with joy
I will end up dust
I'm in heaven

Verse 2:
I stand in golden rays, radiantly
I burn a fire of love, over and over
Reflecting endless light, relentlessly
I have embraced the flame forever and ever

I will scream the word
Jump into the void
I will guide the herd

Up to heaven

Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence (live, 2006)

Enjoy the Silence is Depeche Mode's twenty-fourth UK single, recorded in 1989 and released on 5 February 1990, it was the second single from the then upcoming album Violator.
It is one of the best known Depeche Mode songs, along with "Just Can't Get Enough", "People Are People", "Strangelove" and "Personal Jesus".
It has been recorded by many other artists, including Tori Amos, Anberlin, Breaking Benjamin, Susan Boyle, The Brains, Failure, Hybrid, Keane, Lacuna Coil, Nada Surf, Susanna and the Magical Orchestra, and Tanghetto. Today, many people consider this as Depeche Mode's signature song.
"Enjoy the Silence" was re-released as a single in 2004 for the Depeche Mode remix project Remixes 81 - 04, and was titled "Enjoy the Silence (Reinterpreted)" or, more simply, "Enjoy the Silence 04". The "Reinterpreted" version was remixed by Mike Shinoda, the rapper and producer for the American band Linkin Park.
The single is Gold certificated in the US and Germany.
The song won Best British Single at the 1991 BRIT Awards.
Song versions
The original release of the single included a wide variety of remixes. The standard 12" version of the song is the "Hands and Feet Mix", while the B-side of the 12" version included a dub mix called the "Ecstatic Dub". The limited edition 12" release included three more remixes: the aforementioned "Harmonium" version which follows the structure of the original demo, the "Bass Line" version, and the "Ricki Tik Tik Mix". The latter one is actually an edit omitting a synth part in the middle because Mute had to fit everything on a 3" CD. The boxed rerelease finally had the full version. One of the more unusual mixes is "The Quad: Final Mix" which expands the song to over fifteen minutes in length, making it the longest commercially available Depeche Mode track.
In addition to the "reinterpretation" by Mike Shinoda, there were several more remixes of the song released in 2004. The 12" version of the release included remixes by Timo Maas and Ewan Pearson, while one of the limited edition CDs included a remix from Richard X.
"Enjoy the Silence 04" also included a variety of remixes of other Depeche Mode songs, including a Goldfrapp remix of the Violator track "Halo", a Black Strobe remix of the Some Great Reward track "Something to Do", a Cicada remix of the single "World in My Eyes", and a Rex the Dog remix of the Speak & Spell track "Photographic".
The album version on Violator contains a hidden track called "Crucified", which has Andrew Fletcher on vocals, albeit highly distorted.
World Trade Center Promo Video
In 1990, a promotional video for "Enjoy the Silence" was shot by French TV (for the TV Show "Champs-Élysées" with Michel Drucker) featuring Depeche Mode lip-syncing the song while standing atop the World Trade Center at the WTC rooftop World observatory.[6] In the aftermath of the September 11th attacks, in which the towers were destroyed, this video gained special significance among New Yorkers and others as, now, functioning as an elegant tribute to the victims.
The lyrics:
Words like violence
Break the silence
Come crashing in
Into my little world
Painful to me
Pierce right through me
Can't you understand
Oh my little girl
All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm
Vows are spoken
To be broken
Feelings are intense
Words are trivial
Pleasures remain
So does the pain
Words are meaningless
And forgettable
All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm
Enjoy the silence

Depeche Mode - Wrong

Keyboardist Andy Fletcher referred to this song in an interview with Billboard magazine as, "an antidote to bubble-gum pop inappropriate for where we are in society at this moment."
This song was officially debuted on February 21, 2009, when Depeche Mode performed it at the Echo Awards in Germany.
According to the band's record label website, this song lyrically is about "comic reflections on a lifetime of mistakes, misdeeds and bad decisions."
Martin Gore explained that this was chosen to be the lead single for Sounds of the Universe as, "it's quite different to anything we've released before. I don't know quite what category to put it in musically, but it's got a kind of rap feel to it. It's probably as close to R&B as we're ever going to sound."
The B-side "Oh Well" is the first Depeche Mode track ever to be co-written by both Martin Gore and Dave Gahan. Gore told The Quietus about their collaboration: "It wasn't a real co-write because I had originally written the song as an instrumental but Dave heard it and liked it and he took it back to his hotel room and wrote some words and a melody over the top. It wasn't like we sat in a room and wrote it together. But I guess it is interesting in as much as it is the first time we've co-written a song."
Gore explained the album title in publicity materials: "We've used a lot of old analogue synthesizers and drum machines, which conjure up image of the universe and space travel somehow. We've gone back to a lot of old vintage gear, without making the album sound too retro. It's like yesterday's future. That's why for me it's a perfect album title."
This was Depeche Mode's eighth #1 on the Hot Dance Club Play chart. As a consequence the English band drew level with the Pet Shop Boys for the most #1s by a group on that listing.
The video for this song was directed by Patrick Daughters, who also directed the innovative video for Feist's "1234." In the clip, a man is trapped in a car that is rolling out of control down a city street.
The lyrics:
I was born with the wrong sign
In the wrong house
With the wrong ascendancy
I took the wrong road
That led to the wrong tendencies
I was in the wrong place at the wrong time
For the wrong reason and the wrong rhyme
On the wrong day of the wrong week
I used the wrong method with the wrong technique

Wrong

Wrong

There's something wrong with me chemically
Something wrong with me inherently
The wrong mix in the wrong genes
I reached the wrong ends by the wrong means
It was the wrong plan
In the wrong hands
With the wrong theory for the wrong man
The wrong lies, on the wrong vibes
The wrong questions with the wrong replies

Wrong

Wrong

I was marching to the wrong drum
With the wrong scum
Pissing out the wrong energy
Using all the wrong lines
And the wrong signs
With the wrong intensity
I was on the wrong page of the wrong book
With the wrong rendition of the wrong hook
Made the wrong move, every wrong night
With the wrong tune played till it sounded right yeah

Wrong

Wrong

Too long

Wrong

I was born with the wrong sign
In the wrong house
With the wrong ascendancy
I took the wrong road
That led to the wrong tendencies
I was in the wrong place at the wrong time
For the wrong reason and the wrong rhyme
On the wrong day of the wrong week
I used the wrong method with the wrong technique

Wrong

Depeche Mode - Somebody

Somebody is the first single with Martin Gore as lead vocals, one of only three.
The music videos for both songs were directed by Clive Richardson.
"Somebody", which was sung by Martin L. Gore in the studio in the nude, includes one of Gore's "little twists," where the song builds as if it's a song about finding your perfect love, only to have him reveal at the end "though things like this make me sick / in a case like this I'll get away with it.
The lyrics:
I want somebody to share
Share the rest of my life
Share my innermost thoughts
Know my intimate details
Someone who'll stand by my side
And give me support
And in return
She'll get my support
She will listen to me
When I want to speak
About the world we live in
And life in general
Though my views may be wrong
They may even be perverted
She'll hear me out
And won't easily be converted
To my way of thinking
In fact she'll often disagree
But at the end of it all
She will understand me
Aaaahhhhh....

I want somebody who cares
For me passionately
With every thought
With every breath
Someone who'll help me see things
In a different light
All the things I detest
I will almost like
I don't want to be tied
To anyone's strings
I'm carefully trying to steer clear of
Those things
But when I'm asleep
I want somebody
Who will put their arms around me
And kiss me tenderly
Though things like this
Make me sick
In a case like this
I'll get away with it
And in a place like this
I'll get away with it
Aaaahhhhh....
