Phil Collins - Doesn't Anybody Stay Together Anymore

Doesn't Anybody Stay Together Anymore is a song in which Phil Collins was making a personal message.
The song was made in response to everyone around him getting a divorce, including his manager, friends and himself years before.
Collins later said that he sang this at Charles, Prince of Wales' 40th birthday party, not knowing that the Prince's divorce from his wife, Diana, Princess of Wales, would happen a short time later.
The Phil Collins Big Band played this on tour. In later years, Collins performed a re-arranged version of the song as a ballad as part of his Serious Hits… Live! tour, differing considerably from the original up-beat album version.
"You know, I was very happily married to Jill, my present wife, when I wrote it, but I had been divorced, my manager was getting divorced, a couple of good friends were getting divorced, and I thought, What's going on? Doesn't anybody stay together any more? The song came from that." – Phil Collins, stating his inspiration for the song "Doesn't Anybody Stay Together Anymore?", Playboy interview, October 1986.
The lyrcis:
You keep on walking so you don't fall down
It's the same old story
You keep on hiding so you can't be found
It's the same old story

Oh, but I know you, you're the one who ran
You know why, it's because you can, oh
But it's alright, 'cause I don't mind
I'm just trying to help

But I wonder why, doesn't anybody stay together anymore
I wonder why, doesn't anybody stay together anymore

My friends keep falling and they can't get up
It's the same old story
Well, one says white and the other one black
It's the same old story

And I don't know why you keep emotions walled up
Your heart's on your sleeve, but your sleeve is rolled up
But it's alright, 'cause I don't mind
I'm just trying to help

But I wonder why, doesn't anybody stay together anymore
Oh, I wonder why, doesn't anybody stay together anymore
I wonder why, doesn't anybody stay together anymore
I wonder why, doesn't anybody stay together anymore

Things can change, from a misunderstanding
Nobody talks, nobody hears, oh oh oh

Makes me wonder why, doesn't anybody stay together anymore
Oh, I wonder why, doesn't anybody stay together anymore

You keep on looking for that higher ground
It's the same old story
Your glass is empty and the chips are down
It's the same old story

But I don't know why, your emotions walled up
Your heart's on your sleeve, but your sleeve is rolled up
But it's alright, 'cause I don't mind
I'm just trying to help

But I wonder why, doesn't anybody stay together anymore
Oh, I wonder why, doesn't anybody stay together anymore
Oh, I wonder why, doesn't anybody stay together anymore
Oh, I wonder why, doesn't anybody stay together anymore
Oh, I wonder why, doesn't anybody stay together anymore

Genesis - I can't dance

"I Can't Dance" is the fourth track from the Genesis album We Can't Dance and was the second single from the album ("No Son of Mine" being the first).
The song peaked at number seven on both the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart and received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals in 1993.
During one recording session, Mike Rutherford first created the main riff of the song he called "Heavy A Flat", to which Phil Collins suddenly improvised "I Can't Dance!". The riff was actually inspired by a Levi Strauss & Co. TV commercial using The Clash song "Should I Stay Or Should I Go".
Originally the band did not think of it as anything more than a joke, because the song was too simple, too bluesy and completely unlike Genesis' style. Tony Banks said in an interview "It was one of those bits you thought was going to go nowhere. It sounded fun, but wasn't really special".
It was not until Banks added the keyboard sound effects that the song took on a whole different feeling—with a slight edge of humour in it—which made the band decide to record it.
Banks also said in an interview that it showed a kind of direction Genesis could have gone in. Opposite to what Genesis has done as general practice, which is taking an idea and turning it into a long or complex composition, it was just taking an idea, and leaving it alone.
Music video
The humorous music video (directed by Jim Yukich) illustrates the artifice and false glamour of television advertisements. Phil Collins comments that the video was designed to poke fun of the models in jeans commercials, and each verse refers to things that models in these commercials do. The ending is a parody to the "Black or White" music video, depicting Collins parodying the "Panther ending" in which Michael Jackson dances erratically. Banks and Rutherford eventually arrive to escort Collins off the set, at which point he goes limp and they have to drag him away.
"Weird Al" Yankovic also created a parody of the "I Can't Dance" video in which he appears alongside the band. Mismatched lighting suggests his shots were separate from the others.
The song created the "I Can't Dance dance" (a series of stiff, stylized motions). Collins explained in an interview that when he was at stage school, that he would see kids that would always use the same hand and the same foot when they were tap dancing, meaning they could not coordinate. He then copied their movements and the "dance" was born.
The Lyrics:
No, I can't dance, I can't talk
Only thing about me is the way I walk
No, I can't dance, I can't sing
I'm just standing here selling everything

But I can walk
No I can't dance, I can't dance

Hot sun beating down
Burning my feet just walking around
Hot sun making me sweat
'Gators getting close, hasn't got me yet

I can't dance, I can't talk
Only thing about me is the way I walk
I can't dance, I can't sing
I'm just standing here selling everything

Billy Jean's sitting on the beach
Her dog's talking to me but she's out of reach
She's got a body under that shirt
But all she wants to do is rub my face in the dirt

'Cause, I can't dance, I can't talk
Only thing about me is the way I walk
I can't dance, I can't sing
I'm just standing here selling

Oh, and checking everything is in place
You never know who's looking on

Young punk spilling beer on my shoes
Fat guy's talking to me, trying to steal my blues
Thick smoke, see her smiling through
I never thought so much could happen just shooting pool

But I can't dance, I can't talk
The only thing about me is the way that I walk
I can't dance, I can't sing
I'm just standing here selling

Oh, and checking everything is in place
You never know who's looking on
A perfect body with a perfect face

No, I can't dance, I can't talk
The only thing about me is the way I walk
No, I can't dance, I can't sing
I'm just standing here selling everything

No, no, I can't dance
No I said I can't sing

But I can walk

Video hit Phil Collins

Phil Collins - One More Night (live in Paris, 2004)

One More Night is the first single in America and second in the UK from Phil Collins' third album, No Jacket Required.
It has also been released as the eleventh track on the 1998 compilation album, Hits, as well as the third track on the 2004 compilation album, Love Songs: A Compilation... Old and New.
"One More Night" was Phil Collins' second US number-one single, following "Against All Odds", and was his fourth single to reach the top ten in the UK, peaking at number four on the singles chart. It was also his first number one on the adult contemporary chart.
Collins was playing around with his drum machine when he started saying the chorus of the song. He later recalled that "The rest of the song was written very quickly." Its B-side in the UK was "I Like the Way", while the US received "The Man with the Horn".
The song's music video, directed by Jim Yukich, features Collins playing the piano in a downtown bar. It was filmed at a pub owned by Richard Branson in London (much like the video for Sussudio)".
For a part of the 1990s, the American Red Cross used the song for a public service announcement promoting their emergency shelters.
The song is featured in the opening moments of Martin Scorsese's 1986 film The Color of Money.
After Maroon 5 hit number 1 on the Hot 100 in 2012 with their own unrelated song titled "One More Night", the two songs became one of the rare pairs of songs with the same title to both hit number 1.
The lyrics:
One more night, one more night
I've been trying ooh so long to let you know
Let you know how I feel
And if I stumble if I fall, just help me back
So I can make you see
Please give me one more night, give me one more night
One more night cos I can't wait forever
Give me just one more night, oh just one more night
Oh one more night cos I can't wait forever
I've been sitting here so long
Wasting time, just staring at the phone
And I was wondering should I call you
Then I thought maybe you're not alone
Please give me one more night, give me just one more night
Oh one more night, cos I can't wait forever
Please give me one more night, ooh just one more night
Oh one more night, cos I can't wait forever
Give me one more night, give me just one more night
Ooh one more night, cos I can't wait forever
Like a river to the sea
I will always be with you
And if you sail away
I will follow you
Give me one more night, give me just one more night
Oh one more night, cos I can't wait forever
I know there'll never be a time you'll ever feel the same
And I know it's only words
But if you change your mind you know that I'll be here
And maybe we both can learn
Give me just one more night, give me just one more night
Ooh one more night, cos I can't wait forever
Give me just one more night, give me just one more night
Ooh one more night, cos I can't wait forever

Dire Straits feat.Sting, Eric Clapton, Elton John & Phil Collins- Money For Nothing (Live)

Dire Straits perform Money For Nothing live with Sting, Eric Clapton, Elton John, & Phil Collins at the Prince's Trust Concert on Wembley Arena in 1986.
“Money for Nothing" is a single by British rock band Dire Straits, taken from their 1985 album Brothers in Arms. It was one of Dire Straits' most successful singles, peaking at number one for three weeks in the United States, and it also reached number one for three weeks on the U.S. Mainstream Rock chart. In the band's native UK, the song peaked at number four.
The recording was notable for its controversial lyrics, groundbreaking music video and cameo appearance by Sting singing the song's falsetto introduction and backing chorus, "I want my MTV."
The video was also the first to be aired on MTV Europe when the network started on 1 August 1987.
"Money for Nothing" won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1986 at the 28th Grammy Awards.
Mark Knopfler described the writing of the song in a 1984 interview with critic Bill Flanagan:
The lead character in "Money for Nothing" is a guy who works in the hardware department in a television/custom kitchen/refrigerator/microwave appliance store. He's singing the song. I wrote the song when I was actually in the store. I borrowed a bit of paper and started to write the song down in the store. I wanted to use a lot of the language that the real guy actually used when I heard him, because it was more real....
Notable performances
When Dire Straits performed "Money for Nothing" at the 1985 Live Aid Concert at Wembley Stadium, the performance featured a guest appearance by Sting.
Knopfler performed "Money for Nothing" using his Pensa-Suhr signature MK-1 model guitar with a pair of Soldano SLO-100 tube/valve amplifier heads and Marshall speaker cabinets during the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute and Prince's Trust concerts in 1988, as well as the Nordoff-Robbins charity show at Knebworth in 1990 and the On Every Street world tours in 1991/1992. These versions featured extended guitar solos by Knopfler, backed by Eric Clapton and Phil Palmer.
"Money for Nothing" and "Brothers in Arms" were performed at the 1997 Music for Montserrat concert, with Clapton on rhythm guitar, Sting performing background vocals and Phil Collins on drums.
The lyrics:
Now look at them yo-yo's that's the way you do it
You play the guitar on the MTV
That ain't workin' that's the way you do it
Money for nothin' and chicks for free
Now that ain't workin' that's the way you do it
Lemme tell ya them guys ain't dumb
Maybe get a blister on your little finger
Maybe get a blister on your thumb

We gotta install microwave ovens
Custom kitchen deliveries
We gotta move these refrigerators
We gotta move these colour TV's

See the little faggot with the earring and the makeup
Yeah buddy that's his own hair
That little faggot got his own jet airplane
That little faggot he's a millionaire

We gotta install microwave ovens
Custom kitchens deliveries
We gotta move these refrigerators
We gotta move these colour TV's

I shoulda learned to play the guitar
I shoulda learned to play them drums
Look at that mama, she got it stickin' in the camera
Man we could have some fun
And he's up there, what's that? Hawaiian noises?
Bangin' on the bongoes like a chimpanzee
That ain't workin' that's the way you do it
Get your money for nothin' get your chicks for free

We gotta install microwave ovens
Custom kitchen deliveries
We gotta move these refrigerators
We gotta move these colour TV's, Lord

Now that ain't workin' that's the way you do it
You play the guitar on the MTV
That ain't workin' that's the way you do it
Money for nothin' and your chicks for free
Money for nothin' and chicks for free

Video hit Phil Collins

Phil Collins - Another Day In Paradise

This addresses the problem of ignoring the needy and homeless. It's a rare Phil Collins hit with a socially conscious message.
David Crosby of Crosby, Stills, and Nash, sings on this. Crosby worked with Collins on and off through the late '80s to early '90s; Collins performed background vocals for Crosby's 1993 song, "Hero," from the album Thousand Roads.
"Another Day in Paradise" is a song by Phil Collins released as the first single from his number-one album ...But Seriously (1989). As with his song for Genesis, Man on the Corner, Another Day in Paradise has as its subject the problem of homelessness; as such, the song was a substantial departure from the dance-pop music of his previous album, No Jacket Required (1985). The song was a number-one hit worldwide, and the most successful song of his solo career. It eventually won Collins and producer Hugh Padgham the Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 1991, while it was also nominated for Song of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male and Best Music Video, Short Form. The song also won an award for Best British Single at the Brit Awards in 1990. In the US, it was the final number-one single of the 1980s on the Billboard Hot 100, and Collins' first and only number-one single of the 1990s.
This won a Grammy Award for Record Of The Year.
Collins told The Mail on Sunday: "I wrote this after being in Washington DC where I was amazed by how many people I saw living in boxes."
The song won the 1990 Brit Award for Best Single.
The lyrics:
She calls out to the man on the street
'Sir, can you help me?
It's cold and I've nowhere to sleep,
Is there somewhere you can tell me?'

He walks on, doesn't look back
He pretends he can't hear her
Starts to whistle as he crosses the street
Seems embarrassed to be there

Oh think twice, it's another day for you and me in paradise
Oh think twice, 'cause it's just another day for you,
You and me in paradise, think about it

She calls out to the man on the street
He can see she's been crying
She's got blisters on the soles of her feet
She can't walk but she's trying

Oh think twice, 'cause it's another day for you and me in paradise
Oh think twice, it's just another day for you,
You and me in paradise, think about it

Oh Lord, is there nothing more anybody can do
Oh Lord, there must be something you can say

You can tell from the lines on her face
You can see that she's been there
Probably been moved on from every place
'Cause she didn't fit in there

Oh think twice, 'cause another day for you and me in paradise
Oh think twice, it's just another day for you,
You and me in paradise, just think about it, think about it

It's just another day for you and me in paradise
It's just another day for you and me in paradise, paradise
Just think about it, paradise, just think about it
Paradise, paradise, paradise
