Suntem o jucarie in mana zvonului?

Fă-mi promisiunea aceasta: de cîte ori vei fi înconjurat de persoane care vor să te convingă că eşti nefericit, ia seama nu la ce auzi, ci la ce simţi tu singur; cugetă după ceea ce ai suferit şi întreabă-te singur, pentru că tu îţi cunoşti cel mai bine situaţia: „De ce mă deplîng aceştia? De ce se agită, de ce se tem şi să mă atingă, de parcă nenorocirea ar fi molipsitoare? Este cu adevărat un necaz, sau mai degrabă este doar părelnicia unui necaz?
Întreabă-te singur: „Nu cumva mă frămînt şi mă jelesc fără motiv şi îmi născocesc un rău care nu există?
Dar cum – întrebi tot tu – să înţeleg care din grijile mele sînt adevărate şi care sînt deşarte?
Uite o regulă pe care să o urmezi: ne chinuim din pricina prezentului, sau a viitorului, sau a amîndurora. Este uşor să le judeci pe cele din prezent: dacă trupul îţi este liber, dacă e sănătos, dacă nu există nicio suferinţă provocată de o nedreptate, vom vedea ce va fi în viitor – astăzi nu e nimic.

Mai întîi, gîndeşte-te bine dacă sînt semne sigure că se va produce o nenorocire: căci cel mai adesea ne chinuim din pricina presupunerilor: sîntem o jucărie în mîna zvonului, care hotărăşte de obicei soarta războiului şi, încă şi mai mult, soarta fiecărui individ în parte.
Aşa este, iubitul meu prieten: ne repezim asupra aparenţelor; nu judecăm la rece ce anume ne aruncă în mijlocul spaimelor, şi nici nu le scuturăm, ci tremurăm şi întoarcem spatele întocmai ca soldaţii pe care îi goneşte din tabăra militară un nor de praf stîrnit de o turmă de oi sau ca cei pe care îi umple de spaimă vreo veste despre care nici nu se ştie de la cine a pornit.
Nu ştiu de ce spaimele deşarte tulbură mai tare; căci cele adevărate îşi au o măsură a lor.
Tot ce vine din necunoscut îşi găseşte locul în bănuielile şi spaimele unui spirit dezlînat.
De aceea nu există spaime mai vătămătoare şi de nestăpînit decît cele ale nălucilor: căci spaimele de rînd sînt provocate de lipsa raţiunii, dar acestea – de sminteală.
Să cercetăm aşadar cu atenţie chestiunea.
Este foarte probabil ca ceva rău să se întîmple în viitor: nu înseamnă însă de la sine că este sigur.
Cît de multe sînt cele care vin peste noi fără să le aşteptăm!
Cît de multe sînt cele pe care le aşteptăm şi nu se împlinesc niciodată!
Şi chiar dacă se va întîmpla în viitor, la ce bun să-i ieşi durerii în întîmpinare?
Vei simţi durerea de îndată ce va veni: între timp, speră la ceva mai bun.
Ce vei avea de cîştigat?
Timp.
Pot apărea pînă atunci multe care să facă o primejdie pe care o simţi în vecinătate sau foarte aproape fie să se oprească, fie să se risipească, fie să cadă pe capul altuia: un incendiu lasă loc pentru fugă; o prăvălire i-a lăsat pe unii nevătămaţi; uneori sabia a fost oprită chiar cînd atingea gîtul; cîte unul i-a supravieţuit călăului său.
Chiar şi soarta cea rea este schimbătoare.
Poate va fi, poate nu va fi: deocamdată nu este.
Ţine-ţi în faţa ochilor un viitor mai bun.

Aerosmith - What Could Have Been Love

If you want more guitars, more ‘Legendary Child,’ more of the much-hyped Jack Douglas sound of Aerosmith‘s rockin’ ’70s, then their new single is not going to satisfy.
What Could Have Been Love’ is the AC radio hit the group needs to reach a wide audience and sell a ton of copies of ‘Music From Another Dimension‘ on Nov. 6.
Not surprisingly, Douglas didn’t produce this power-ballad. The honor goes to longtime friend and collaborator Marti Frederiksen, who also co-wrote the song along with Steven Tyler and keyboardist Russ Irwin (Frederiksen also helped write ‘Jaded’ from the ‘Just Push Play’ album).
Much like ‘Jaded,’ ‘Cryin’ and ‘Crazy,’ ‘What Could Have Been Love’ is a tight lyric wrapped in bright production that highlights Tyler’s voice.
“I wake up and wonder how everything went wrong / Am I the one to blame / I gave up and left you for a nowhere bound train,” he sings to open the song. (Can we please stop using trains as the ultimate rock metaphor?)
“Now that train (sigh) has come and gone / I close my eyes and see you lying in my bed / And I still dream of that day,” Tyler adds to finish the first verse. The backing vocalists take to repeating his lyrics late in the song, adding the only over-the-top moment of pop sensibility.
The stock chorus lacks imagination or real detail, but Tyler pulls it up with a passion one wouldn’t expect from a man who once broke hearts like Joey Kramer breaks drum sticks.
“What could have been love / Should have been the only thing that was ever meant to be / Didn’t know, couldn’t see what was right in front of me / And now that I’m alone all I have is emptiness that comes from being free / What could have been love will never be,” he sings.
The bottom line is that if this site was called Ultimate Classic Power Ballad, ‘What Could Have Been Love’ would be a staff favorite. Rock fans can appreciate the necessity of this style, but few will embrace it like a song that finds Joe Perry shredding on guitar, or Tyler doing his trademark vocal calisthenics between harmonica solos.

Blue October - The Chills (acoustic)

The Texas quintet Blue October formed during the post-grunge boom of the mid-'90s when vocalist/guitarist Justin Furstenfeld began penning angst-ridden rock songs with the help of his brother, drummer Jeremy Furstenfeld, and violinist Ryan Delahoussaye.
Bassist Matt Noveskey and lead guitarist Brant Coulter completed the band's initial lineup, and Blue October released an independent debut album, The Answers, in 1998.
The band's emotive brand of post-grunge led to the sale of 5,000 copies in their native Houston alone.
Two years later, Blue October made their major-label debut on Universal with Consent to Treatment.
History for Sale By the time Blue October began prepping for their third album, 2003's History for Sale, guitarist Coulter had left the group and CB Hudson (guitar/vocals) had been added.
The band itself had also left Universal for Brando Records. The album's first single, "Calling You," became a Top 40 hit thanks to its inclusion on the American Wedding soundtrack, and Universal re-signed the band in the wake of such newfound success. The live CD/DVD package Argue with a Tree was released in February 2005, following 18 months of touring. Noveskey briefly left the band shortly thereafter, but returned in time to record Blue October's first studio album in three years, Foiled, which was issued in April 2006 and went platinum one year later.
Foiled for the Last Time Before the band went on tour with Yellowcard in September 2007, Universal/Motown released Foiled for the Last Time, a two-disc set consisting of a full version of Foiled, 14 newly recorded songs performed live, and several alternative remixes.
Recording sessions for another studio album, Approaching Normal, commenced in mid-2008 with producer Steve Lillywhite, and the finished product appeared early the following year.
Two albums appeared in 2011, Ugly Side: An Acoustic Evening with Blue October (recorded live in Austin, Dallas, and Houston) and Any Man in America.
The the group's seventh studio album, Sway, followed in 2013.

Carly Simon - That's The Way I Always Heard It Should Be

"That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be" is a 1971 single written by Carly Simon and Jacob Brackman and performed by Simon, released from her self-titled debut album. It reached number ten on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and number six on the Easy Listening chart.
An art song with a semiclassical melody in the style of Gabriel Fauré, Elektra staffers were worried the single was too emotionally complex to be released as Simon's first single.
With subject matter that includes "the parents' bad marriage; the friends' unhappy lives; the boyfriend's enthusiasm for marriage but controlling nature; the woman's initial resistance and ultimate capitulation."
Simon was quoted as saying, "When I first wrote it I thought it was an unusual thing for people to break up, and now all my friends are divorced”.

U2 - I Still Haven't Found What Im Looking For (Live From Milano)

"I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" is a song by the Irish rock band U2.
It is the second track from their 1987 album The Joshua Tree and was released as the album's second single in May 1987.
The song was a hit, becoming the band's second consecutive number-one single on the US Billboard Hot 100 while peaking at number six on the UK Singles Chart.
The song originated from a demo the band recorded on which drummer Larry Mullen, Jr. played a unique rhythm pattern.
Like much of The Joshua Tree, the song was inspired by the group's interest in American music. "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" exhibits influences from gospel music and its lyrics describe spiritual yearning. Lead vocalist Bono's vocals are in high register and guitarist The Edge plays a chiming arpeggio. Adding to the gospel qualities of the song are choir-like backing vocals provided by The Edge and producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois.
"I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" was critically acclaimed and received two nominations at the 30th Grammy Awards in 1988, for Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
It has subsequently become one of the group's most well-known songs and has been performed on many of their concert tours.
The track has appeared on several of their compilations and concert films.
Many critics and publications have ranked "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" among the greatest tracks in music history.

Bob Dylan - Tangled Up In Blue

"Tangled Up in Blue" is a song by Bob Dylan. It appeared on his album Blood on the Tracks in 1975. Released as a single, it reached #31 on the Billboard Hot 100. Rolling Stone ranked it #68 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
The song has been described as, "The most dazzling lyric ever written, an abstract narrative of relationships told in an amorphous blend of first and third person, rolling past, present and future together, spilling out in tripping cadences and audacious internal rhymes, ripe with sharply turned images and observations and filled with a painfully desperate longing."
About lyrics
"Tangled Up in Blue" is one of the clearest examples of Dylan's attempts to write "multi-dimensional" songs which defied a fixed notion of time and space. Dylan was influenced by his recent study of painting and the Cubist school of artists, who sought to incorporate multiple perspectives within a single plane of view.
As Neil McCormick remarked in 2003: "A truly extraordinary epic of the personal, an unreliable narrative carved out of shifting memories like a five-and-a-half-minute musical Proust."
In a 1978 interview Dylan explained this style of songwriting: "What's different about it is that there's a code in the lyrics, and there's also no sense of time. There's no respect for it. You've got yesterday, today and tomorrow all in the same room, and there's very little you can't imagine not happening".
The lyrics are at times opaque, but the song seems to be (like most of the songs on the album) the tale of a love that has, for the time being, ended, although not by choice; the last verse begins:

Dylan continually re-worked the lyrics even after the album was released; the version on his live album Real Live (and throughout the '84 Europe tour) has radically different lyrics.
In the first studio version (NYC sessions, September '74) and often in live performances he has sung some of the verses from a third-person perspective (usually "he was laying in bed," but sometimes even "she was laying in bed"), as opposed to the first-person point of view in the Blood on the Tracks version. Dylan has said that the version recorded on the 1984 Real Live album is the best.

The song has been covered by various artists, including Great White, Jerry Garcia, Dickey Betts and Great Southern, Mike McClure, Half Japanese, Robyn Hitchcock, the Indigo Girls, Kim Larsen, KT Tunstall, Ani Difranco, The String Cheese Incident, Jennifer Charles and The Whitlams on their Eternal Nightcap album of 1997.
  • In the Hootie & the Blowfish song "Only Wanna Be with You", Darius Rucker sings: Yeah I'm tangled up in blue / Only wanna be with you / You can call me your fool / Only wanna be with you. The reference extends a string of mentions of Bob Dylan in the song, beginning at the start of the second verse: Putting on a little Dylan .... The song's rhythm itself seems to be inspired by Dylan's original track.
  • The band Cameo described the song as 'definitive' in their musical development and frequently opened concerts with a funk version of the song. Barb Jungr and Louis Durra have recorded jazz versions.
  • The Belgian TV-host Bart Peeters, who is also a singer-songwriter, made a Dutch version of the song. The lyrics are modified by him, and as a result he tells a more personal story about how he met his wife. The Dutch title is "Prachtig in het blauw" ([looking] beautiful in blue).
  • Texas Country artist Hayes Carll includes the lyics You was openly frustrated / you said Dylan's overrated / while singing Tangled Up In Blue in his 2011 song "Another Like You".
  • The song is a playable track on Rock Band 2, as the most difficult song in the vocal section, and the final song for the player to complete in the "Impossible Vocal Challenge".
  • Science fiction author Joan D. Vinge published Tangled Up in Blue in 2000[5] as the fourth book in her Hugo Award-winning "Snow Queen" series.
  • A female artist named Sami quotes the lines, "We'll meet again someday on the avenue/tangled up in blue" in Michael Corrigan's book These Precious Hours.

Billy Bragg - Swallow My Pride

Bragg told The Independent that the lyrics were inspired by the everyday frustrations of his relationship with his long-term partner, Juliet. "We've had a great time," he said, "and we have a lovely son, Jack, who's 19, and who's been lucky enough to have had a lovely childhood. But, you know, we have our days when we crack our heads, when I don't live up to her expectations of me and when she doesn't live up to my expectations of her. And this causes domestic friction. But the struggle in a relationship is where the sparks are, and I'm writing about things that frustrate me."
Bragg added that, lyrically he took certain artistic license. "I've never left home like my character in 'Swallow My Pride' has," he said, "but have I gone a few days without speaking [to her] I most certainly have. And have I been on tour and not phoned because I'm pissed off? Yes I have. If I were to suggest otherwise, my son would call me out as a liar."

Sunny Sweeney - Staying's Worse Than Leaving

"Staying's Worse Than Leaving" is the title of a song co-written and recorded by American country music artist Sunny Sweeney. It was released in May 2011 as the second single from her album Concrete.
Sweeney wrote the song with Radney Foster and Jay Clementi.
The song's female narrator describes being in a failed relationship that has gone on for quite some time, because she felt like staying was easier ("Leaving's hard / Trust me it's really bad"). Although she acknowledges that the best option she can do at this point is walk away, because she knows that "staying's worse than leaving.
Music video
The music video, which was directed by Roman White, premiered on CMT on May 19, 2011. In the video, Sweeney and her husband are shown walking around their spacious home separately, both appearing distraught; Sweeney tears up, and the man frequently wrings his hands. At the end of the video, the two finally come together to sleep in the same bed.

Billy Talent - Rusted from the Rain
"Rusted from the Rain" is the first official single by Billy Talent off their album, Billy Talent III. It was released on May 19, 2009.
Lead singer Ben Kowalewicz has said that the song is very "tin man-esque" and evolved from an "epic Soundgarden-like riff".
The lyrics are about marital breakdown, Kowalewicz told Kerrang!: "Nowadays, I'm seeing a lot of people who got married young are now getting divorced. It seems to be a new fad. Divorce is the new black."
The song was nominated for Single of the Year at the 2010 Juno Awards, but lost to Michael Bublé's "Haven't Met You Yet".
Music video
The video was shot in April 2009 by director Wayne Isham in Los Angeles. The video pans between the band playing in a junkyard and a vagrant collecting junk and garbage in the streets. As the video progresses, it's revealed the man collected the trash to construct a makeshift carousel for a small group of children in the neighbourhood.

Kellie delivers line after line on the album The Woman I Am with palpable feeling and rich emotion. Belting it out on the swampy “Ring For Sale,” Kellie sings, I’ll throw in the dress for free, with fire when looking to get rid of a cheating man’s engagement ring.
"A girlfriend from home is going through this as we speak," Pickler told The Hollywood Reporter. "She had asked me in the middle of her whole divorce thing what she should do with the ring and I said, 'Sell it and go do something nice for yourself; I think you have earned that right considering what he has done.' So I heard that song and I played it for her and it made her smile. So I thought, I'm going to cut this for my friend. And when I sing it, I am going to be thinking of her, even though it's written in first person."
