Video hit The Undisputed Truth

The Undisputed Truth - Smiling Faces Sometimes

Smiling Faces Sometimes is a soul song written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong for the Motown label. The song was originally recorded by the Temptations in 1971.
Producer Norman Whitfield had the song re-recorded by the Undisputed Truth the same year, resulting in a number-three Billboard Hot 100 position for the group.
"Smiling Faces" was the only Top 40 single released by the Undisputed Truth, and was included on their debut album The Undisputed Truth.
Both versions of "Smiling Faces Sometimes" deal with the same subject matter, "back-stabbing" friends who do their friends wrong behind their backs ("Smiling faces sometimes...they don't tell the truth...smiling faces sometimes tell lies"), but in different ways. The Temptations' original uses an arrangement similar to a haunted house film score to represent feelings of fear and timidness. Included on the 1971 Sky's the Limit album, "Smiling Faces Sometimes" runs over 12 minutes, most of which is extended instrumental passages without any vocals.
An edited version was planned as the Temptations' summer 1971 single release, but this plan was dropped when lead vocalist Eddie Kendricks, frustrated by personnel problems within the group, quit the Temptations and signed a solo deal with Motown in March 1971.
Whitfield was known for recording dramatically different versions of the same song with different Motown artists, including Smokey Robinson & the Miracles' "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" (re-recorded as hit records for Gladys Knight & the Pips, and Marvin Gaye) and the Temptations' "War" (re-recorded as a hit for Edwin Starr). After Kendricks left The Temptations, an undaunted Whitfield re-recorded the song with his latest protégés, psychedelic trio Undisputed Truth. It has since been covered by Bobbi Humphrey, Joan Osborne, Rare Earth, and others.
Future Undisputed Truth singles would never make it higher than #63, a position attained by both 1972's "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" and 1974's "Help Yourself". Ironically, "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" was re-recorded by The Temptations shortly after its release, and the re-recorded version became not only a #1 pop hit, but a three-time Grammy Award winner as well.
The O'Jays' similarly themed 1972 hit "Back Stabbers" quotes the lyrics "smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes..." in the refrain near the end of the song.
Whitfield later revisited the song for the 1973 album Ma, recorded by Motown's white rock band, Rare Earth, which he produced and wrote.
In 2013, "Smiling Faces Sometimes" was featured in the video game Grand Theft Auto V.
The lyrics:
Smiling faces sometimes pretend to be your friend
Smiling faces show no traces of the evil that lurks within
Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes
They don't tell the truth uh
Smiling faces, smiling faces
Tell lies and I got proof
The truth is in the eyes
Cause the eyes don't lie, amen
Remember a smile is just
A frown turned upside down
My friend let me tell you
Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes
They don't tell the truth, uh
Smiling faces, smiling faces
Tell lies and I got proof
Beware, beware of the handshake
That hides the snake
I'm telling you beware
Beware of the pat on the back
It just might hold you back
Jealousy (jealousy)
Misery (misery)
Envy
I tell you, you can't see behind smiling faces
Smiling faces sometimes they don't tell the truth
Smiling faces, smiling faces
Tell lies and I got proof
Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes
They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces, smiling faces
Tell lies and I got proof
(Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes)
(Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes)
I'm telling you beware, beware of the handshake
That hides the snake
Listen to me now, beware
Beware of that pat on the back
It just might hold you back
Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes
They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces, smiling faces
Tell lies and I got proof
Your enemy won't do you no harm
Cause you'll know where he's coming from
Don't let the handshake and the smile fool ya

Take my advice I'm only try' to school ya

Video hit Boyz II Men

Boyz II Men - On Bended Knee

"On Bended Knee" is a 1994 number-one hit single by Boyz II Men for the Motown label. Written and produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the song reached #1 on the Hot 100 Airplay and #2 on the Hot Singles Sales on December 3, 1994.
"On Bended Knee" stayed at number one for a total of six weeks.
The single is notable for having replaced the previous Boyz II Men single, "I'll Make Love to You", as the top song on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. This was the first time that an act had replaced itself at number one since the Beatles, when "I Want to Hold Your Hand", "She Loves You", and "Can't Buy Me Love" monopolized the top of the chart for a total of 14 weeks.
Music video
The music video featured the band members and their break up and eventual reconciliation with four famous actresses: Kim Fields, Renée Jones, Lark Voorhies, and Victoria Rowell. The video begins with Wanya's girlfriend (Voorhies) in the car with him, accusing him of looking at another woman at the grocery store, and she gets out of the car, leaving Wanya alone.
He eventually finds her sitting on bleachers where they make up. Shawn meets a girl (Rowell) with a dog at the park and falls in love with her after just meeting her. Michael gets into a fight with his girlfriend (Jones) on his birthday and he's shown alone, drawing a picture of her, but then she comes back to him.
Nathan is shown concentrating more on writing music than spending time with his girlfriend (Fields), which frustrates her so she writes a break-up note on his mirror and leaves him, but she eventually returns to him. The band appears singing on the subway and in the rain.
The music video was filmed in New Orleans, Louisiana. It includes footage from Audubon Park, the streetcar, and the French Quarter.
The lyrics:
Darlin' I can't explain
Where did we lose our way
Girl it's drivin' me insane
And I know I just need one more chance
To prove my love to you
If you come back to me
I'll guarantee
That I'll never let you go

Can we go back to the days our love was strong
Can you tell me how a perfect love goes wrong
Can somebody tell me how to get things back
The way they used to be
Oh God give me a reason
I'm down on bended knee
I'll never walk again until you come back to me
I'm down on bended knee

So many nights I dreamt
Holding my pillow tight
I know that I don't need to be alone
When I open up my eyes
To face reality
Every moment without you
It seems like eternity
I'm begging you, begging you come back to me

Can we go back to the days our love was strong
Can you tell me how a perfect love goes wrong
Can somebody tell me how to get things back
The way they used to be
Oh God give me a reason
I'm down on bended knee
I'll never walk again until you come back to me
I'm down on bended knee

I'm gonna swallow my pride
Say I'm sorry
Stop pointing fingers the blame is on me
I want a new life
And I want it with you
If you feel the same
Don't ever let it go
You gotta believe in the spirit of love
It'll heal all things
It won't hurt any more
No I don't believe our love's terminal
I'm down on my knees begging you please
Come home

Can we go back to the days our love was strong
Can you tell me how a perfect love goes wrong
Can somebody tell me how to get things back
The way they used to be
Oh God give me a reason
I'm down on bended knee
I'll never walk again until you come back to me
I'm down on bended knee

Wanna build a new life
Just you and me
Gonna make you my wife

Raise a family

Video hit Luciano Pavarotti and James Brown

Luciano Pavarotti & James Brown - It's a man's world (live)

James Brown performed with Luciano Pavarotti on May 28,2002 at a concert titled, "Pavarotti & Friends" benefiting the people of Angola.
This pairing an unexpected duo.
Pavarotti's more formal operatic style teamed with The Godfather of Soul, James Brown.
Two men blessed with incredibly powerful voices balance and complement each other so surprisingly well.
The song's lyrics, which Rolling Stone characterized as "almost biblically chauvinistic", attribute all the works of modern civilization (the car, the train, the electric light) to the efforts of men, but claim that it all would "mean nothing without a woman or a girl."
Brown's co-writer and onetime girlfriend, Betty Jean Newsome, wrote the lyrics based on her own observations of the relations between the sexes.
In later years, Newsome would claim that Brown didn't write any part of the song and argued in court that Brown sometimes forgot to pay her royalties.
The composition of It's a Man's Man's Man's World developed over a period of several years. Tammy Montgomery, better known as Tammi Terrell, recorded "I Cried", a Brown-penned song based on the same chord changes, in 1963. Brown himself recorded a demo version of the song, provisionally entitled "It's a Man's World", in 1964. This version later appeared on the CD compilations The CD of JB and Star Time.
The released version of "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" was recorded quickly, in only two takes, with a studio ensemble that included members of Brown's touring band and a string section arranged and conducted by Sammy Lowe. A female chorus was involved in the recording sessions, but their parts were edited out of the song's final master.
"It's a Man's Man's Man's World" became a staple of Brown's live shows for the rest of his career. Its slow, simmering groove and declamatory vocal line made it suitable for long, open-ended performances incorporating spoken ruminations on love and loss and sometimes interpolations from other songs.
It appears on almost all of Brown's live albums starting with 1967's Live at the Garden. Brown also recorded a big band jazz arrangement of the song with the Louie Bellson Orchestra for his 1970 album Soul on Top.
In 2004, "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" was ranked number 123 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.
The song has been recorded by many artists in various idioms over the years.
The lyrics:
This is a man's world, this is a man's world
But it wouldn't be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl

You see, man made the cars, to take us over the road
Man made the train, to carry the heavy load
Man made the electric light, to take us out of the dark
Man made the boat for the water, like Noah made the ark

This is a man's, man's, man's world
But it wouldn't be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl

Man thinks about a little baby girls and a baby boys
Man makes then happy, 'cause man make them toys
And after man make everything, everything he can
You know that man makes money, to buy from other man

This is a man's world
But it wouldn't be nothing, nothing not one little thing
Without a woman or a girl

He's lost in the wilderness
He's lost in bitterness

He's lost, lost somewhere

Video hit Louis Armstrong

Louis Armstrong - When The Saints Go Marching In

When the Saints Go Marching In, often referred to as "The Saints", is an American gospel hymn. The precise origins of the song are not known.
Though it originated as a Christian hymn, it is often played by jazz bands.
The song is sometimes confused with a similarly titled composition "When the Saints are Marching In" from 1896 by Katharine Purvis (lyrics) and James Milton Black (music).
The tune is particularly associated with the city of New Orleans. A jazz standard, it has been recorded by a great many jazz and pop artists.
Both vocal and instrumental renditions of the song abound.
Louis Armstrong was one of the first to make the tune into a nationally known pop tune in the 1930s. Armstrong wrote that his sister told him she thought the secular performance style of the traditional church tune was inappropriate and irreligious.
Armstrong was in a New Orleans tradition of turning church numbers into brass band and dance numbers that went back at least to Buddy Bolden's band at the start of the 20th century.
In New Orleans, the song is traditionally used as a funeral march at "jazz funerals". While accompanying the coffin to the cemetery, a band plays the tune as a dirge.
Returning from the interment, the band switches to the familiar upbeat "hot" or "Dixieland" style of play.
The lyrics:
Oh, when the saints go marching in
Oh, when the saints go marching in
I want to be in that number
When the saints go marching in
Oh, when the drums begin to bang
Oh, when the drums begin to bang
I want to be in that number
When the saints go marching in
Oh, when the stars fall from the sky
Oh, when the stars fall from the sky
I want to be in that number
When the saints go marching in
Oh, when the moon turns red with blood
Oh, when the moon turns red with blood
I want to be in that number
When the saints go marching in
Oh, when the trumpet sounds its call
Oh, when the trumpet sounds its call
I want to be in that number
When the saints go marching in
Oh, when the fire begins to blaze
Oh, when the fire begins to blaze
I want to be in that number
When the saints go marching in
Oh, when the saints go marching in
Oh, when the saints go marching in
I want to be in that number
When the saints go marching in.

Video hit Nat King Cole

Nat King Cole - When I Fall In Love

When I Fall in Love is a popular song, written by Victor Young (music) and Edward Heyman (lyrics).
It was introduced in the film One Minute to Zero.
Jeri Southern released the original version in April 1952 with the song's composer, Victor Young, handling the arranging and conducting duties.
The song has become a standard, with many artists recording it, though the first hit version was by Doris Day released in July 1952.
Nathaniel Adams Coles (March 17, 1919 – February 15, 1965), known professionally as Nat King Cole, was an American singer and musician who first came to prominence as a leading jazz pianist. He was widely noted for his soft, baritone voice, which he used to perform in big band and jazz genres.
Cole was one of the first African Americans to host a television variety show, The Nat King Cole Show, and has maintained worldwide popularity since his death from lung cancer in February 1965.
Cole was inducted into both the Alabama Music Hall of Fame and the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame. In 1990, he was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 1997 was inducted into the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame.
In 2007, he was inducted into the Hit Parade Hall of Fame.
An official United States postage stamp featuring Cole's likeness was issued in 1994.
In 2000, Cole was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the major influences on early rock and roll
The lyrics:
When I fall in love it will be forever
Or I'll never fall in love
In a restless world like this is
Love is ended before it's begun
And too many moonlight kisses
Seem to cool in the warmth of the sun
When I give my heart it will be completely
Or I'll never give my heart
And the moment I can feel that you feel that way too
Is when I fall in love with you.
And the moment I can feel that you feel that way too
Is when I fall in love with you.

Video hit Seal

Seal - Crazy (live at Peace Prize Nobel, 11 December 2012)

Crazy is a song originated by English soul artist Seal, who wrote its lyrics and jointly composed its music in collaboration with producer Guy Sigsworth.
The song was produced by Trevor Horn for Seal's debut album Seal (1991).
Released as his debut single, "Crazy" became one of Seal's biggest hits, reaching the top five in the United Kingdom and first top ten in the United States.
It has since been interpreted by several artists, including Alanis Morissette, whose version was released as a single from her album The Collection (2005).
The song's signature is a keyboard mantra that continually swells and swirls, driven by bass-heavy beats and wah-wah pedal guitars.
It’s floating, ambient stylings established a sound years before "The Politics of Dancing" by Paul Van Dyk or William Orbit's work with Madonna and All Saints. Orbit produced a remix of the track for the single release.
Seal's vocals are deeply melodic and soulful, at times with a characteristic rasp, while at others soaring high above the backing track.
In the United Kingdom the song was released as the first single from the album Seal in November 1990 (see 1990 in music) and peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart in January 1991 and is Seal's biggest solo hit there.
The single sold over 200,000 copies, thus earning a BPI Silver certification.
It won Seal a number of awards including the 1992 Ivor Novello award for songwriting.
The single was released in the United States in 1991, debuting at number eighty-three on the Billboard Hot 100 in mid-June; it peaked at number seven in late August and remained on the chart for nineteen weeks, until October.
It reached the top five on the Modern Rock Tracks chart and the top twenty on the Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales chart.
It was the most commercially successful single from Seal and was Seal's biggest hit in the U.S. until "Kiss from a Rose", which reached #1 in 1995.
In August 2003 an acoustic version of "Crazy" charted at number four on Billboard's Hot Digital Tracks chart.
The single's music video, directed by Big TV!, features multiple re-creations of Seal himself performing the song against a primarily white background. A female dancer appears just before the bridge of the song, and at the end Seal holds a dove while snow falls on him.
The song plays during a party scene in the film "Naked in New York," released in (1993), is heard in a Baywatch episode, in the trailer for the film The Basketball Diaries (1995) and featured in a scene in Spike Lee's Clockers, released in 1995.
It is also heard in the middle of "True Calling," the second episode of Season 6 of TV's Cold Case.
It was also used as a theme song for the ABC-TV series Murder One, which was transmitted during the 1995–1996 television season. It is also heard in the film Mystery Date.
Seal is seen singing this song on an episode of the ABC series Eli Stone.
The middle break of the song, In a Sky Full of People, Only some want to fly, isn't that Crazy? is repeated towards the end of Seal's 1996 hit interpretation of "Fly Like An Eagle."
The song is the fourth track on Just Say Anything, volume five of the Just Say Yes collection.
The lyrics:
In a church, by the face
He talks about the people going under
Only child know
A man decides after seventy years
That what he goes there for, is to unlock the door
While those around him criticize and sleep
And through a fractal on a breaking wall
I see you my friend, and touch your face again
Miracles will happen as we trip
But we're never gonna survive, unless
We get a little crazy
No we're never gonna survive, unless
We are a little crazy
Crazy yellow people walking through my head
One of them's got a gun, to shoot the other one
And yet together they were friends at school
Ohh, get it, get it, get it, get it no no
If all were there when we first took the pill
Then maybe, then maybe, then maybe, then maybe
Miracles will happen as we speak
But we're never gonna survive unless
We get a little crazy
No we're never gonna survive unless
We are a little crazy
No no, never survive, unless we get a little bit
Oh, a little bit
Oh, a little bit
Oh
Oh
Amanda decides to go along after seventeen years
Oh darlin'
In a sky full of people, only some want to fly
Isn't that crazy
In a world full of people, only some want to fly
Isn't that crazy, crazy
In a heaven of people there's only some want to fly
Ain't that crazy
Oh babe, oh darlin'
In a world full of people there's only some want to fly
Isn't that crazy, isn't that crazy, isn't that crazy, isn't that crazy
But were never gonna survive unless, we get a little crazy
No were never gonna to survive unless we are a little
But were never gonna survive unless, we get a little crazy
No were never gonna to survive unless, we are a little, crazy
No no, never survive unless, we get a little bit
And then you see things
The size of which youve never known before
They'll break it
Someday, only child know
Them things
The size of which youve never known before
Someday...
Someway...
Someday...
Someway...
Someday...
Someway...
Someday...

The lyrics:
I wanna be with you, gotta be with you, need to be with you
I wanna be with you, gotta be with you, need to be with you
Chemistry was crazy from the get go, neither one of us knew why
We didn't deal nothing overnight cuz a love like this takes some time
People swore it off as a phase, said we can't see that
Now from top to bottom, they see that we did that
Yes, it's so true that
Yes, we've been through it
Yes, we got real sh**
Yes
See baby we've been too strong for too long
And I can't be without you baby
And I'll be waiting up until you get home
Cuz I can't sleep without you baby
Anybody who's ever loved, ya know just what I feel
Too hard to fake it, nothing can replace it
Call the radio if you just can't be without your baby
I got a question for ya
See I already know the answer
But still I wanna ask you
Would you lie?
No
Make me cry?
No
Do somethin' behind my back and then try to cover it up?
Well, neither would I, baby
My love is only your love
Yes, I'll be faithful
Yes, I'm for real
Yes, and with us you'll always know the deal
We've been too strong for too long
And I can't be without you baby
And I'll be waiting up until you get home
Cuz I can't sleep without you baby
If anybody who's ever loved, ya know just what I feel
Too hard to fake it, nothing can replace it
Call the radio if you just can't be without your baby
See this is real talk
I'ma always stay, no matter what
Good or bad, thick and thin
Right or wrong, all day every day
Now if you're down on love or don't believe
This ain't for you
No, this ain't for you
And if you got it deep in your heart
And deep down you know that it's true
Come on, come on, come on
Well, let me see you put your hands up
Hands up
Fellas tell your lady she's the one
Fellas tell your lady she's the one, oh
Put your hands up
Hands up
Ladies let him know he's got you locked
Look him right in his eyes and tell him
We've been too strong for too long
And I can't be without you baby
I'll be waiting up until you get home
Cuz I can't sleep without you baby
If anybody who's ever loved, ya know just what I feel
Too hard to fake it, nothing can replace it
Call the radio if you just can't be without your baby
Hey oh
Hey oh
I wanna be with you, gotta be with you, need to be with you
I wanna be with you, gotta be with you, need to be with you
I wanna be with you, gotta be with you, need to be with you
I wanna be with you, gotta be with you, need to be with you
I wanna be with you, gotta be with you, need to be with you

Video hit Macy Gray

Macy Gray - I try

"I Try" is a song co-written and recorded by American musician Macy Gray. It was released in September 1999 as the second single from her debut album On How Life Is, released in North America in January 2000 (See below).
It was Gray's biggest hit to date. It peaked at number six in the United Kingdom, number five in the United States, and number one in Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland.
At the 2001 Grammy Awards, "I Try" won Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, the first to be awarded to an African-American artist winner in the category, since Toni Braxton's "Un-Break My Heart" in 1997, and was also nominated for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. It remains Gray's biggest hit single in the USA to date, and her only one to reach the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100. In 2010, the song was featured in an episode of The Office.
The video for the song, directed by Mark Romanek, depicts Gray waking up in a hotel room, buying flowers, and traveling through New York City to meet a man in a park. At one point she is seen entering a Lexington Avenue subway entrance, which at the time served the 6, E, and F lines. The platform which her train arrives on, however, is the 63rd Street Connector which would indeed become the Lexington Avenue F line stop one year later.
At the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards, the video won Best New Artist and was nominated for Best Female Video.
The lyrics:
Games, changes and fears
When will they go from here
When will they stop
I believe that fate has brought us here
And we should be together babe
But we're not
I play it off, but I'm dreaming of you
And I'll keep my cool, but I'm fiendin'

[Chorus]
I try to say goodbye and I choke
Try to walk away and I stumble
Though I try to hide it, it's clear
My world crumbles when you are not here
Goodbye and I choke
I try to walk away and I stumble
Though I try to hide it, it's clear
My world crumbles when you are not here

I may appear to be free
But I'm just a prisoner of your love
And I may seem all right and smile when you leave
But my smiles are just a front
Just a front, hey
I play it off, but I'm dreaming of you
And I'll try to keep my cool, but I'm fiendin'

[Chorus]

Here is my confession
May I be your possession
Boy, I need your touch
Your love, kisses and such
With all my might I try
But this I can't deny
Deny

I play it off, but I'm dreaming of you
(but I'm dreaming of you babe)
And I'll keep my cool, but I'm fiendin'
