Povestea din spatele melodiei este una foarte tristă, aceasta apărând într-un moment de cumpănă pentru cariera lui Eric Clapton. După ce în 1990, într-un accident de elicopter, câțiva apropiați (printre care și managerul său) au murit, în 1991, copilul său de patru ani a murit după ce a căzut de la al 53-lea etaj al unui apartament din New York. O poveste extrem tristă care l-a marcat, care a dat naștere acestui cântec. 

Vizibil afectat de pierderea suferita, Eric Clapton a compus acest cantec trist, care a fost si cel mai de succes dintre piesele sale.

Alte informații despre melodie: 

• Piesa a apărut pe soundtrack-ul filmului Rush (1991); 
• Will Jennings a luat parte la scrierea versurilor (este un textier american celebru; el a scris și versurile de la „My Heart Will Go On”); 
• Melodia a fost inclusă în 2004 pe lista Rolling Stone: The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
